Overview
International workforce development is strengthened through partnerships that combine practical learning, knowledge exchange, and effective project coordination.
As part of the Professional Placements Program, implemented by Strategic Development Group and funded by the Australian Government through the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), two members of MAGSIGE Multi-Purpose Cooperative travelled to Victoria, Australia to undertake a short-term dairy farm placement.
The initiative was established to provide practical exposure to Australian dairy farming systems while supporting cooperative capacity-building and agricultural knowledge sharing between Australia and the Philippines.
Throughout the project, Capacité Australia worked alongside Australian and Philippine partners to coordinate participant preparation, documentation, communication, and placement support, helping ensure the program was delivered efficiently from preparation through to completion.
Project Background
The Professional Placements Program is a government-supported initiative that promotes skills development through short-term international placements between Australian and Southeast Asian organisations.
For this project, MAGSIGE Multi-Purpose Cooperative partnered with Mountain Milk Cooperative in Victoria to provide selected cooperative members with supervised, practical training within commercial dairy farm operations.
Rather than employment, the placement focused on structured learning, professional development, and the transfer of practical knowledge. Participants were immersed in Australian dairy farming environments where they observed established farming systems, workplace practices, and industry standards that are currently not widely available within the Philippine dairy sector.
The project reflects a shared commitment to strengthening agricultural capability through international collaboration and cooperative partnerships.
Coordination and Project Delivery
Delivering an international placement program requires coordinated engagement between multiple organisations, comprehensive participant preparation, and ongoing communication throughout each stage of the project.
Capacité Australia supported the delivery of the program by coordinating activities between Australian and Philippine stakeholders while assisting participants before and during their placement.
Our involvement included:
- Coordination of participant documentation and administrative requirements
- Liaison between project partners across Australia and the Philippines
- English readiness and workplace communication preparation
- Cultural preparation for participants prior to departure
- Ongoing coordination throughout the placement period
Working closely with all stakeholders, our objective was to ensure participants were well prepared to transition into an Australian workplace and fully engage with the learning opportunities provided by the placement.
Participant Preparation
Preparation formed an important part of the placement process.
Prior to travelling to Australia, participants completed English readiness and workplace communication training coordinated by Capacité Australia. The program focused on practical communication skills relevant to Australian workplaces, helping participants build confidence in everyday conversations, understand workplace expectations, and communicate effectively within a professional farming environment.
By investing in participant preparation before departure, the program aimed to create a smoother transition into the placement while enabling trainees to focus on developing practical skills once they arrived on farm.
Placement Experience
Hosted by member farms of Mountain Milk Cooperative in Victoria, participants gained practical experience within commercial dairy operations under the supervision of experienced farm managers.
Training activities included:
- Daily dairy farm operations
- Animal handling and welfare
- Farm safety procedures
- Workplace health and safety practices
- Australian agricultural workplace culture
- Team-based farm operations
The placement provided an opportunity to observe and participate in established Australian dairy systems while developing practical capability through real workplace experience.
